Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited (BHAVINI)

Fusing the strengths of Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research (IGCAR) and Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) a new public sector company Bharitiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited (BHAVINI) was created to carry out the construction and operations of DAE's firt 500 MWe proto-type fast breeder reactor. The responsibilities of IGCAR and NPCIL have been clearly identified through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the organisations.

Financial Sanction for PFBR was accorded by Govt. of India in September 2003. The company Bharathiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited ( BHAVINI ) was registered under the Companies Act, 1956 on 22nd October 03. The Certificate of commencement of operation was issued on 18.11.03. Actual physical work has already been commenced.

Project Location: Kalpakkam, Tamilnadu, India (80 Kms from Chennai city)

Total Poject Cost: Rs 3492 Crore

Expected synchronisation to Grid: 2009

Status: Site excavation work commenced in September 2003 and contract for construction of Nuclear Island Buildings has been awarded.

A unique feature of the project is that it is required to site-assemble several large sized components sauch as main vessel, inner vessel, reactor roof etc. A large site assembly shop would be available at site for the purpose.
