The overall response from the visitors, which included academicians, students, technologists and the general public, was excellent. They took keen interest in the publications. It is estimated that about seven thousand persons visited the radiation technology, food irradiation, R&D in bio-sciences, nuclear power generation, safety and environmental issues. The questions asked, were recorded and replies are being sent. This provided a good feed back to DAE on what excites the mind of the public. The DAE stall was amply covered by media — notably AIR, Doordarshan and Zee TV.
This interaction through the Book Fair helped the Department to reach out to a serious minded section of our society. - AM

Q. What is the need for food irradiation?
A. Irradiation not only reduces storage losses in warehouses by extending shelf- life of edibles but also destroys insects and micro-organisms which damage food and cause diseases. Chemical disinfestation methods, such as fumigation, require repeated applications as these do not eliminate insect eggs. They also leave harmful residues in the treated grains. Radiation disinfestation destroys not only the full grown pests but even eggs, thereby eliminating the need for repeated treatment. It is therefore ideally suited for large scale operations. It also does not leave behind any residue. Irradiation can also serve as an effective process for disinfestation of certain pre-packed cereal products. Irradiation is perhaps the most effective method to eliminate food-borne pathogens even in pre-packed condition.
