Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee visited Trombay on October 31, 2002 to dedicate to the nation the new facilities of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). He declared open by remote control, six facilities viz. Krushak (Krushi Utpadan Sanrakshan Kendra) at Lasalgaon (Maharashtra), Nuclear Desalination Demonstration Plant (NDDP) at Kalpakkam (Tamil Nadu), Medical Cyclotron - Positron Emission Tomography Facility at the Radiation Medicine Centre of BARC, Mumbai, and the refurbished research reactor CIRUS, Uranium Thorium Separation Facility and Waste Immobilisation Plant (WIP) at Trombay.

The Desalination Plant is meant for providing process water for the nuclear power station at Kalpakkam and drinking water for the neighbouring people; Krushak is a facility for sprout control in onion and conservation of agricultural produce; the Medical Cyclotron is a sophisticated facility for diagnosis of cancer, cardiac, neurological and psychiatric disorders; CIRUS after refurbishment is now ready to serve for another couple of decades; U-Th Separation Facility is for processing irradiated thorium rods from the research reactors at Trombay, and the WIP is for the management of radioactive liquid waste generated during reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel from research reactors at BARC.

The Prime Minister also gave away the Indian Nuclear Society and DAE awards.
