The cold synthesis gas depleted in deuterium from the
first exchange tower, before its return to Ammonia Plant, is heated by the incoming feed
gas from the same plant and is passed through an ammonia synthesis unit. In this unit, a
portion of the synthesis gas equivalent to the amount of the ammonia cracked in the
crackers is converted to ammonia and fed to the top of the first exchange tower. The
rest of the depleted synthesis gas equivalent to the feed gas supplied is returned to
ammonia plant. |
|
Make-up water for the cooling towers of the plants is obtained from the Mahi river. Other utilities like nitrogen, steam etc. required in the plant are supplied by GSFC. |
Some the special features of the plant include the following: i) This is the first plant operating at a very high pressure of 640 Kg/sq.Cms. based on the Ammonia Plant with which it is integrated. Thus the isotopic exchange towers are required to be operated on this high pressure which involved thick wall, multi-layer vessel construction and since these towers are operated at low temperatures, this involves use of special materials capable of withstanding such low temperatures. During its construction, a number of technical challenges had to be overcome in view of the heavy and complex nature of the equipment use. |
|
ii) For achieving intimate mixing of the synthesis gas with liquid ammonia and thus promoting efficient extraction of deuterium from the synthesis gas, specially developed ejector trays are used in the isotopic exchange towers. Since the use of this type of trays leads to high pressure drop in the Exchange Tower. it becomes necessary to use submersible (canned motor) pumps in each tray section for the transfer of liquid ammonia from one stage to the other. iii) High pressure and high temperature cracking of deuterium rich ammonia was employed for the first time in this plant, requiring use of special materials of construction and sophisticated fabrication techniques for avoiding loss of deuterium. |
