Effects

Remarks

0.001

Odour threshold for very sensitive individuals.

0.13

Odour threshold for most persons.

10

Eye irritation after several hours’ exposure.

10

TLV (occupational exposure limit).

15

TLV-STEL for 15 min.

50

Irritation of the eyes and respiratory tract, conjunctivitis, keratitis, photophobia after several hours.

100

Sense of smell lost after a few minutes (olfactory paralysis).

Rhinitis, bronchitis, pulmonary edema from repeated or prolonged exposure. Haemorrhage and death possible within 48 hours. Slight systemic effects.

Based on the design basis accidents scenarios the maximum concentration of H2S beyond 1.5 km from the plant will be less than 125 ppm.

250

Haemorrhage and death within a few hours. Symptoms of CNS depression; headache, nausea, sensory and motor impairment, possibly leading to unconsciousness.

300

IDLH (concentration considered to be of immediate danger to life and health).

500

Acute systemic effects dominate. CNS stimulation; increased respiration rate followed by respiratory arrest and possible death within few minutes.

1000

Lethal within a breath or two.

(This is only for information)

ppm = parts per million on volume basis

CNS = Central Nervous System

TLV = The time-weighted average concentration for a conventional 8-hour workday and a 40-hour work week, to which it is believed that nearby all workers may be repeatedly exposed, day after day, without adverse effect.

TlV-STEL = is defined as a 15-minute TWA (Time Weighted Average) exposure which should not be exceeded at any time during a workday even if the 8-hour TWA is within the TLV. There should be at least 60 minutes gap between successive exposures in this range. Exposures above the TLV upto the STEL should not be longer than 15 minutes and should not occur more than four times per day.

IDLH = (Immediately Dangerous to Life & Health) : Maximum concentration in the air to which a healthy adult worker could be exposed for 30 minutes without suffering permanent or escape impairing health effect (Source: WS=EPA Manual-NIOSH).
