Uranium Corporation of India Ltd.

During the year 1999-2000 the overall performance of the company has shown marked improvement. The income of the company was Rs. 145.37 crore and net profit was Rs. 11.51 crore in comparison to the previous year’s income of Rs. 134.18 crore and net profit of Rs. 3.7 crore.

At present the company is operating three underground mines at Jaduguda, Bhatin and Narwapahar and one Processing Plant at Jaduguda. It also operates two uranium recovery plants at Rakha and Mosaboni to recover uranium concentrate present in the copper tailings of the copper concentrator plants of M/s. Hindustan Copper Limited. In addition, magnetite present in the uranium ore is being recovered as a by-product in the uranium process plant.

The Jaduguda Mine is about 33 years old. The upper levels of the mine have exhausted. To extract the ore from deeper levels, work of III-Stage Shaft Sinking has been taken up. The work of shaft sinking has been completed and orders for the winders were placed.

The opening of new mine at Narwapahar and expansion of existing mill at Jaduguda have been completed.The company continued its efforts to ensure that future requiremnets of fuel for the nuclear power reactors, would be met.

To monitor and control the cost of production, various steps have been taken. A reputed consultant has been appointed to study and suggest steps to reduce the level of inventory. M/s. MECON, Ranchi, have been awarded the work of energy audit.

The company has started its own Management Training Centre at Narwapahar. The first programme on "Radiation Protection and Environmental Surveillance related to UCIL operations" was conducted on 5th January 2001 at the Centre.

The Company accords the highest priority to the environment protection and conservation. For this purpose, full fledged Environmental Survey Laboratories (ESLs) are functional at the Jaduguda and Narwapahar Mines. These laboratories of the BARC carry out routine radiological monitoring and check for potential of conventional hazards in the mines and mill. They also maintain surveillance on the environment in and around Jaduguda and their efforts are reviewed by an independent regulatory authority. All these ensure that UCIL’s operations are conducted in an environmentally safe manner.
