Geochronological studies on rock and minerals is carried out by:

Rubidium- Strontium method

Samarium-Neodymium method

Uranium-lead method

Initially, the organisation had fabricated one mass spectrometer in 1964. Presently, a fully automated, multicollector thermal ionisation mass spectrometer, VG 354 is used for isotopic analyses of Rb, Sr, Sm, Nd, U and Pb.

Data generated from this laboratory have found place in different publications.

Sulphur isotope analysis is also carried out with the help of a triple collector, electron bombardment (gaseous source) mass spectrometer equivalent to VG 903. Facility for the separation of CO2 gas from carbonate mineral sample in order to carry out carbon isotope analyses is also available.
