The chemistry
laboratories are located at Hyderabad and at six regional centers
at New Delhi, Bangalore, Shillong, Nagpur, Jaipur and Jamshedpur.
The laboratory at Hyderabad is equipped
with instruments like Fluorometer (optical and laser), Atomic Absorption
Spectrophotometer (AAS), Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectrometer
(ICPAES), Molecular Absorption Spectrophotometer, Flame photometer,
Mercury analyser etc. The instrument ICP–AES is also available at
Bangalore, Nagpur,
New Delhi and Shillong. The other instruments e.g. Fluorometer,
AAS, Molecular Absorption Spectrophotometer and flame photometer
are available in all the regional centers.
Over the years, an excellent interface
of man and machine has resulted in generating a fair level of expertise
in the determination of elements like U, Th, Be, Nb, Ta, W, Mo, Zr,
alkali metals, alkaline earths, 1st series transition
elements (Sc-Zn), rare earth elements (including Y), As, Se, B, Ga,
Ge, Sn , Pb, Bi
etc., in the range from parts per billion for some to percentage
level for others.
The research works from the laboratory
have resulted in developing new procedure as well as in improving
the existing methods of analysis. About sixty elements of the periodic
table are within the routine reach of this laboratory and the dependability
of data is as good as anywhere else. Currently, the laboratory at
Hyderabad is engaged to standardise suitable procedures for estimation
of platinum group elements by Fire Assay technique and also to procure
ICPMS to augment the analytical output.
